Event proceeds to benefit HIV/AIDS project in Zimbabwe
This Christmas season, the Culwick Choral Society is proud to present performances of Handel’s Messiah on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th December, 2008, in benefit of Bóthar and supported by RTÉ lyric fm.
Tickets are €30 each and are available for purchase through Bóthar, Ticketmaster and at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Both choral performances will take place at the magnificent medieval St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin 8, beginning at 8pm each night.
Composed in the summer of 1741 and premiered in Dublin by the choirs of St. Patrick’s and Christchurch Cathedrals on 13th April, 1742, Messiah is Handel's most famous musical work and is often an important part of Christmas festivities worldwide. Culwick Choral Society’s President, Magdalen O’Connell, says the group chose Bóthar as the event beneficiary because of its widespread appeal across the country. “People across Ireland understand that Bóthar’s work gives hope to people living in seemingly hopeless situations, “ she says, adding “Their work to help those in need embodies the spirit of the Christmas season. We are pleased to support Bóthar’s work to end hunger and poverty worldwide.” For the choral performances this year, RTÉ lyric fm is adding its generous support as the sole national media sponsor for the choral event.
All proceeds from these performances will directly benefit the Tariro (Hope) HIV/AIDS Project in the Mwenzi district in southern Zimbabwe. This district suffers from some of the highest incidences of HIV/AIDS in the entire country, with one in four people infected with virus. Working in partnership with Heifer International in Mwenzi, Bóthar is assisting people living with AIDS, widows, orphans and child-headed families through gifts of livestock and training to become self-reliant. As with every Bóthar project, all recipients are required to pass on an animal offspring and necessary training to other families in need—creating a far-reaching ripple of hope to help stabilize the region and assist generations to come.
Please join Bóthar and other supporters in celebration of this musical tradition and in honour of so many in need this Christmas.
