BÓTHAR ANNOUNCES REHABILITATION ALLOCATION
FOR CHINA PROGRAMME
Bóthar, the international development organisation working to end world hunger and poverty, continues to assess the status of its projects in China in the wake of recent devastation following the 12 May earthquake. Field staff of partnering organisations and project participants were unhurt; however, Bóthar staff have confirmed that funded projects involving smallholder farms in the Sichuan region sustained varying levels of damage in the disaster. As such, Bóthar’s Board of Directors has allocated US$100,000 in emergency rehabilitation funds to be immediately distributed in affected region, according to Peter Ireton, C.E.O. of the organisation.
“Bóthar is a livestock development organisation rather than an emergency relief agency,” said Ireton. “However, Bóthar sets aside discretionary funds for use in rehabilitating projects faced with situations of extraordinary circumstance, where natural disasters or other unforeseen events have occurred. Even as relief agencies continue to work in China, Bóthar will begin to fund the rebuilding of damaged farms and communities to help restore our projects there. We are committed to helping project partners and participating families rebuild their lives.”
Bóthar has funded projects in China since 2000. Since then, the organisation has helped thousands of people become self-reliant through environmentally-sound agricultural training and gifts of livestock. In the mountainous quake zone, Bóthar helps to provide goats, pigs and other small animals to families in need, as smaller-sized farm plots typically leave families without the ability to support large ruminants. In Sichuan and Chonging, two of the hardest-hit areas, Bóthar projects involve over 700 families.
To further assist families and projects in need, Bóthar has established the China Assistance Fund, allowing donors to directly contribute to rehabilitate projects and support Bóthar’s work in the country.
